Public health entity explores sustainable model for senior leadership development. CS002

Situation

Preiser Consultants was retained by a state public health department to assist in developing a plan to foster positive cultural change within their respective work units, build leadership capacity, and improve their coaching skills as leaders.

Interventions

  • Discovery–Assessment methods are used to conduct an organizational needs assessment. Examples of the types of instruments and processes used include 360° multi-rater surveys, organizational climate surveys, personal interviews, and focus groups.
  • Assessment–360 multi‐rater administered for each participant evaluating the leader’s indexes in trust, empowerment, and competence in systems and processes, and clarifying objectives.
    • DiSC management personality style assessment provided to all participants; comparative analysis of individual direct reports to senior supervision was provided, and departmental scatter diagrams with in‐depth analysis were provided.
    • Social and Emotional Intelligence assessments and coaching session provided to all participants.
  • Live Training–Franklin Covey® Leadership Modular Series consisted of five, one day modules delivered monthly over five months. Each module included tools, skills training, and mind set of the titled leadership concept.
    • Two-day formal coach training via “Leader as Coach” training module.
    • One-day facilitated group interactive session provided team building, internal consolidation exercises, and future pacing dynamics.
  • Biofeedback–Heart Math bio‐feedback training. Each participant was provided with a Hearth Math monitor and trained in its use. Mindfulness mp3 recording and Neuro‐Linguistic Programming mp3 recordings were provided to all participants.

Results

As a whole, the group improved their leadership scores in all areas measured by the Franklin Covey® Leadership Quotient Assessment. In addition, there was a significant improvement (50%) in the group’s aggregate Net Promoter Score (“All things considered, how likely are you to recommend [Manager] as a leader to others?”). Self‐reported outcomes by the leaders include:

  • 100% learned more about their leadership through the program
  • 100% would recommend this program to others
  • 96% improved their performance as a leader
